A FEW NOTES FROM MY DIARY...
We finally arrives in Singapore, 30 min before schedule. The airport was really efficient as our luggage was already waiting for us when we got out from the customs. Then we tried to find our way to the buses, that wasn´t all that easy! At the bus a Swedish middleaged lady came up to us and told us we couldn't´t pay the bus with notes so we had to go and do some change to get coins instead. Then she wanted us to go with her to her "hotel" but we already have our accommodation fixed. The bus was really crowded and we had a hard time to see where we were going. We tried to follow our way on a little map, but it was just to hard and as it became dark outside we decided to ask the driver where to get off. It was very hot...The haze because of the bushfires wasn´t as bad as we thought it would be, it was more like a very thick "soldis" (Swedish word).
We jumped off the bus with no idea where we were, it was pretty dark outside now and there weren´t exactly crowded with people...We found one and asked our way to Ruffles hotel as we know our way from there, a guy gave us a description but after a short while we found out it was all wrong!!
Our bags were now feeling VERY HEAVY! Mine weighted about 18 kilos.
We finally found The Ruffles Hotel which looked really nice with the "Samurai" guarding it´s main entrance. But we weren´t staying there, we went to our place, The Cozy Corner Backpackers. It was a little place in a corner. A thin stairway was the way in. The landlord was a big girl that wasn´t that good in Speaking English. But suddenly Anette comes out of one of the rooms with a huge smile on her face! She arrived there earlier today.
We drop our bags and head right out to find out something about the nightlife in Singapore. We didn´t go far....We ended up at the Famous Long Bar in Ruffles Hotel where the floor was cowered with "nötskal". We order the "must" drink there - The Singapore Sling - A very tasty sweet red drink!
...We enjoyed until we had to pay the bill...That drink cost way more then our accommodation.*laugh*...We tearde our pockets inside out and barley manage to pay! Then we were out of there! (All three with happy smiles on our faces..)
Back t the Cozy Corner.... Our room was just a small one with double bed but we decided we could share it as none of us wanted to sleep all alone. We had to pay the Landlady a little extra for that and promise that if the owner showed up that we would say that we were renting the room next door aswell because of his greedy.
We sleeped all three in the bed, laying in the wrong direction. It was very hot! None of us sleeped very well...
97-10-03...THE SPIDER!!! Yesterday we arrived at this island of paradise! The only way to get here was by boat. ...Well..if you could call that a boat that is...It was more like a canoe....the GILI
AIR is a small peaceful island without any electricity, running water or other facilities. We found ourselves a little cottage by the beach. This is a very popular place among honeymooners..And I can´t blame them. It is beautiful and we almost have all the blending white beach all by ourselves.
The first thing I saw when I woke up in the morning was a HUGE spider on the INSIDE of Anettes moscuitonet!..It was about 10cm diameter..Euuhhhh!! I told Anette VERY quietly to get out of her bed as quickly as possible by the short end, NOT the ordinary way out of the net...I´m glad to say the spider didn´t notice her! As we didn´t know if it was a poisoness spider or not we didn´t dare to try to move it. So it sat there almost half the day until we could find a local guy that was more than glad to help us out. He just took the spider with his bare hands....It was just a harmless little fellow...*sigh of relief*
Later the same day that guy came over and was VERY interested in my gymnasticshoes...a well worn pair of NIKES...If I had had another pair of shoes with me I belive I would have given him them...But I didn´t wanna walk around barefooted in this land of snakes..
Here I teached Ann how to go skindiving, how to use the snorkel and mask. She was abit scared in the beginning, later on I found it hard to get her out of the water!! *smile*
In the evening we went out to one of the restaurants, we had to use our handy-lamps to find our way as there where no roads nor lights. We found a nice restaurant and made our order. I ordered Chicken satay, very yummy Indonesian dish with peanutsauce. After a while the girl that took our order came back to me and was very sorry, this is what she said:
" I´m terrible sorry, could you please take another dish as we have run out of chickens. I even sent someone down to the village but there wasn´t anyone around there either!" We found that very amusing as we didn´t even know there WAS a village on the island!!! Oh! And of course I ordered something else..Gado-gado I think it was, a vegetarian dish with peanutsauce.THE SCHOOL OF GILI-AIR!! There was some girls that came to us everyday at the beach and wanted to chat for a while..They were so cute! And..of course they wanted to sell what they have made and delicious pineapples that they peeled while we were watching, they were very good at it, and it was very yummy. They were very interested in us and where we came from. All of them were selling by the beach after school to be able to save enough money to continue school at Lombok..Not all of them will afford that though I´m sad to say...
One day we decided to pay the village a visit.
The village was a cute little made of several cottages. Suprisingly some of them with antennas on the roof (that was most often made out of stravs). There was a mosque and….After some surch we found the School just outside. It was a small one and there was lunchtime as we came by. Some of the girls recognized us from the beach and got soooo happy!
They were very proud to show us their school. It was about five classrooms and extemly dirty. With heaps of pupils in every class. The teacher proudly presentated us their schoolbooks….that was about to fall apart any second. But they were so glad to have that at least!….In Sweden people complains about bad taste in the schoolfood…That by the way is free….Guess they don´t realise how good they have it.
Then we went outside agin. The little boys and girls were so intrested in us but very shy at the same time. They kind of pushed their friends towards us. But some of them was very brave and actually dared to touch us. This was a very toutching experience.
Then we had to ruch back to check out from our little cabin. But we did have time to walk the long beach and almost no human in sight…..

..DOLPHIN-WATCHING WITHOUT DOLPHINS!Some days have past and we are now in Lovina on the North coast of Bali. The beach here is almost black due to the volcanoes. Lovina is a great place to go in Bali as there aren´t many turist around. It haven´t been exploated yet and I sure hope it will stay this way. The locals are still friendly and curious about you and not ONLY interested in selling things. Anyway….
This day we got up around 5.30 to be down the beach at 6. As we were going to see dolphins! Me, Ann and Annette was very excited and extreamely tired. The morning was so beautiful. It was still almost dark and the water was very calm. And we were almost freezing. The boat was very slim..more like a very small canoe. A man was the "captain" of this canoe and his wife had made us some breakfast to have out on the see while whatching the sunrise. It was tea and pineapples.
Our boat and about 10 others left to find the dolphins….first 15 minites in one direction…then another 10 in another…then they changed and went back for 10…and they continued like that for about an hour and a half…And we were getting soooo sleepy…But..if we would fall asleep we would have fallen into the water for sure as there was nothing to hold on to and we kind of sat on top of the canoe…And in the water there could be SHARKS…..shivering thought..
We didn´t see anything even close to a dolphin…but there was a lovely sunrise and funny and memorable experience.
TO BE CONTINUED…..
